30-day writing challenge ~ Day 10 (The Babysitter)

The babysitter.  Day 10 of the WWFC writing challenge.

One of the scariest things you have to do as a parent, is locate a babysitter.  In an ideal world, a parent would never EVER need a break from their delightful progeny.  But such is not the case, there comes a time you will have to use a babysitter. One teenaged girl had a penchant for locking the kids in the shed.  Luckily, the kids were old enough to tell me and once I learned of her "method," her babysitting career ended.

From the worst babysitter to the best, I had the good fortune of locating a home daycare in the neighborhood of a retired woman and her husband.  She was just starting her business and my kids were the first two she cared for.  Her house always smelled wonderful, good things baked daily, and a feeling of a refuge.  It was a sad day when my kids grew too old to remain in her care.

  1. At one point my kids were babysat after school by the woman across the road. They never told me at the time but years later I found out she made them sit on a chair in the corner. I guess they didn't want us to know they'd been bad. Nevertheless they both turned out all right.

  2. I had one wonderful woman who actually took care of about 15 kids and did it well. She set out carved hams at lunch time (or roast beef or roast turkey), with vegetables galore and salads. The kids loved her and I loved her. I felt totally confident that she would do the best thing for them, sometimes even beyond what I would do. Bless her!

  3. The only sitters we've used are for our cats, but there is still concern. All that we've had have been reliable and done a good job - as far as we can tell. The most recent one is the best because the cats actually come out to see her. This helps in making sure Rosie eats like he should.

  4. I was lucky with my older kids. At the time, I worked in daycare and got to bring the kids to work with me. With my youngest, that was no longer the case. Luckily, we found a wonderful educator who has watched over him for the past 4 years. We're also fortunate that both sets of grandparents are retired and always willing to babysit.
