30-day writing challenge ~ Day 4 (Behind the Wheel)

Day 4 of the WWFC Writing Challenge, with today's topic being ~ Behind the Wheel.

June was the month our family would drive to Anaheim, California.  The annual tradition began when Disneyland opened and continued well into my brother's and my early adulthood.  This image was taken on a family road trip with a stop at a Navajo Indian Reservation in June of 1963.

My first car was a Honda sedan.  This was an embarrassing car.  It is incredibly tiny and when we would pull up to a curb and four people would pile out, we received the comment, more than once, "We thought the circus had just come to town."

Before the recession/depression hit, I drove a white 2006 Mercedes Benz C230.  It is the kind of car you LIKE to drive.  In fact, you make up places to go to, just to drive the car.  It had cream-colored leather upholstery, a retractable sunroof and cornered like a dream.  But it went the way of all things luxury, gone - poof, after I experienced a 25% cut in pay.  Now I drive a 1997 Toyota Camry, a commuter car, 4 speed, crappy cornering (what I call the "granny car.")  Humph!

You haven't experienced life until you've attempted to teach your sixteen year old to drive.  There were more dashboard holding, teeth clenching episodes while I was a passenger with my son behind the wheel.

I used to be a holy terror on the road.  I'd curse at drivers, gesticulate wildly, speed up, slow down.  Phew, glad I'm over that.

So are you a mellow motorist or a road rager?

  1. I think that Honda looks like it would have been fun to drive. I had an 87 Dodge Colt as my second car and would take it everywhere. Awesome stuff.

  3. Love that T-Bird. Awesome. I'd forgotten teaching my kids to drive. You made me think of some great times teaching them all on a stick-shift. There were still forehead imprints on the dashboard when I finally sold it.

  4. Nice T Bird! I love the rear because it looks/and was designed to mimic rocket afterburners. You may have been embarrassed by your first car, but I like that kind of Honda.

  6. My first car was a '78 Chevy Malibu. It was a tank. I loved that car. I think we piled a dozen people into that thing and still had room for a couple cases of beer. Nice take on today's challenge! 200 points! :-)

  7. My first car was a 1970 Pontiac Firebird. It seems most of my friends either had Firebirds or Camaros.

  8. Your little honda is super cute! I'm not much of a car person...but I've been lusting after a 1950's pick up of late.

  9. That Honda reminds me of the high top early BMWs. We took our Beemer wagon to the Navajo Rez a couple of years ago to see my husband's family. She did just fine!
