30-day writing challenge ~ Day 11 (A Sense of Accomplishment)

A Sense of Accomplishment - WWFC's Day 11 writing challenge topic.

As a teen, I was a classical musician, the French horn being my instrument.  Performing in concert always produced a sense of accomplishment.  There was the immediate response from the audience and there is nothing like applause.  It washes over you in waves, bathing you in acceptance and appreciation of the effort you've expended in preparation for and performance of the music.

In 1977, my senior year in high school, I auditioned for and was chosen as first chair French hornist with America's Youth in Concert.  The group went on a month-long tour of Europe.  Concert venues included New York's Carnegie Hall, London's Albert Hall and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.

After graduation from high school, I began playing the violin and performed with the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra for a number of years.

I miss performing with a group, but practice and performance take time.  Between working full time, attending college part time and commuting, my participation in the arts is limited (with the exception of writing and photography).  I do envision a return to music performance when career and college consume less time.

  1. That is so awesome that you were so accomplished as a French hornist!!! I took French Horn lessons in the 4th grade and that was my most UNaccomplished moment of my life, I think! I couldn't even accomplish carrying that thing to school. It was too heavy for me in the case and my friend had to help me put it on the bus every week. I also sucked at reading music and pretty much doing all things French Horn! I am sure you are very proud! And then the violin too? You are amazing!!

  2. Lovely instrument, the French Horn. That was quite an accomplishment to play it at the level you did. I played the tympani drums in the high school band. I couldn't read music for the life of me and this seemed like a good choice.

  3. Wow! That is an accomplishment! It's sad that life gets in the way of these things.

  4. Wow, that is impressive! Hopefully you'll be able to find enough time to play every once in a while, at the very least for your own enjoyment. Lovely post, Tami... 250 points! :-)
