Thrift A Go Go

Thrifting starts to get interesting once the holidays are behind us. This American Girl doll came in a $6.99 bag at thrift with some other toys. Somewhere along the line, she lost her clothes and was found in this poor girl dress not made for her. She did come with crutches and a stethoscope though. Keeping her for the future. At this point, I have gathered so many toys from thrift I could start my own daycare!👶Friday flowers photobomb the image.

Cashmere sweaters start showing up at the secondhand shops too. I found a yummy baby blue large cashmere sweater - quite holey but since repaired. I hope to find more cashmere sweaters at thrift since the doggy destruction rate is overcoming my inventory.

Best find so far - a yoga mat with carrier $2.99 at thrift, $60 retail. I knew one would show up. The mat was needed for my adult ballet class beginning Monday.🩰

Hospice thrift in my county is filled with baby and kid clothing. I honestly don't know where these donations are coming from. We are a county of mainly retirees. Maybe it is from grandma/grandpa donations.

Made this meme my FB cover.

Weather has been a bit wild so time has been spent cutting patterns from the fabric.

There wasn't enough green fabric chosen for the project so I opted for a pale blue flamingo print

I wear what I wore in grade school

Thrifting of the Christmas kind meant I found 5 holiday-related needle kits, an Annalee elf, and a pink bottle brush tree

Segueing to clothes talk - I have realized that the outfits I wear now are the outfits I wore in grade school. Girls were required to wear skirts. Because I liked to play on the bars, I wore shorts under my skirts. I now wear a skirt over shorts/leggings.

I continue with tap dance classes - now a year under my belt. One strenuous exercise class a week is all my body can handle. When not tapping, I fill in with a local wellness strength training class

Upcoming events - if all goes as planned, I will be in Anaheim in April. My first FUN trip since retirement. Lurking on the Disney website to buy a 3 day park hopper for 1/2 off for California residents. There is a Final Fantasy convention and there might be some cosplay involved!

Corned Beef Dinner the 1970s Way

Thrifting brought me this keeper pheasant sewing pattern.

I also scored on a $1.99 bag of fabric, batting for a queen sized quilt, and a Gaither Gospel sealed in package CD. This batting is meant for my purple-themed fan quilt currently in progress. I am in the boring part - trimming the blocks.

Cute pattern of the day is from 1978. A few more were listed on eBay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/186347786110

It is my first try at corned beef and cabbage. My fav grocery store had both items on nearly giveaway sales. I found this recipe in the 1971 publication of Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book

It Only Takes One Day

It only takes one day of sourcing in my area to hit on nearly all of my eBay listing categories. I have the good fortune of being able to travel to 4 reliable thrift shops with it taking less than 2 hours to visit all 4.

The $50 total spent will be parlayed into many more 💸 The fan quilt blocks came in at $10 for the finished 12. The cowboy-themed jelly rolls were $6. The patchwork pieced quilt top cost me $7. Those three items fall into the keeper category. The contents of the 99 cent tub are yarn, small package of doll clothes, sealed CDs, a quilt kit with fabric, and sewing patterns. Best of the keepers are the fan quilts blocks featured in the lead-off image. Sorry Lava Lamp pattern, you've been bumped by the 2024 Fan Quilt. Here is the fabric pull incorporating the vintage fabric pieced backing.

My daughter has claimed the Cowboy Quilt, adding in the jelly roll remnants gained through this recent thrifting excursion. The image below is the first fabric pull for that project.

My latest eBay listing session are CDs. Those preowned ones I run through a listen on my commute to work. Love the ones 😍still sealed in package. Bought for 50 cents each, they are quick money in the pocket.

I am beyond pleased to report that I had my first $250 week of sales. That is clear profit money in the bank. As I continue to add to my listings, I move closer to my goal of $1,000 a month in sales.

Happy New Year and How to Become Wealthy Buying Thrift

Here we are in 2024.

My longtime readers know that because I am back at college, I will sneak in references to what I will be studying.

This is how you prepare when you are a 60+ year old student, my class Women in Art begins in March but I began reading the textbook now.

Let's go on to my topic of becoming wealthy buying thrift. To give some background, I have been shopping at second-hand stores for over 50 years. The majority of those years, I just bought for myself, friends, and family. There is one proviso-I shop in upscale communities.

A few years ago, I decided I had enough items in my personal collection to list for sale on eBay. I already had an eBay account for selling my used college textbooks. I also had a somewhat extensive vintage sewing pattern collection. At the time, I was scanning in the pattern packet fronts and sharing them as a Pattern of the Day on this blog.

Having moved out of management and into public service in my job, I didn't require the professional wardrobe I had before. My clothes choices turned to casual and most items were bought at thrift.

I am sort of a clumsy person when it comes to mugs and dishes. I break them on a routine basis. I have replaced our stoneware pattern at least three times, all through thrifted pieces. I love coffee mugs and as a Seattle native am a regular coffee drinker. Our mug collection comes from thrift.

Pyrex, when you find it in the wild, is very popular to sell. I keep a few pieces I have found for my own use.

China plates, etc. you can nearly find for the taking, seems no one entertains large groups anymore. Last year I picked up at Goodwill some Christmas-themed plates at 99 cents each.

The point being you can furnish your house, kitchen, bedroom, buying thrifted items. There are deals in furniture (avoid fabric upholstery), lamps, linens, and artwork.

You can clothe yourself and nearly your entire family with thrifted clothing. Our hospice thrift occasionally has $1 clothing items sales. How can you beat that? I pick up the best items and then take those to a clothing reseller who will give me $5-$6 per item. 💥BOOM, money just made.

I am a business major with a legal background. The idea, and you may have heard this phrase before, is Buy Low and Sell High. As an example, I can buy sewing patterns for 25 cents to $1 each. Each pattern will then sell for $5 to $25. Multiply that by the thousands of patterns I have listed - it generates an income of $500 a month of clear profit. I am not going to detail all of the costs of selling here but those who have their own businesses know there is the cost of time and opportunity.

What are opportunity costs? I define it as something you have to give up in pursuit of something else. In other words, rather than pursuing fun, leisure activities, you choose to invest in work.

My last tidbit on money management. The financial area where most people run into trouble is in the purchase of a new vehicle. Dealers are loathe to outright sell the vehicle and will steer a consumer into a lease. That lease will cost the consumer double the cost of the vehicle. After the lease is over, the consumer can then buy the vehicle. In some cases, the total cost exceeds $200,000. How is that problem solved? You save until you have the purchase price of the vehicle, or have it financed through a credit union.

In sum, keep your funds close and your friends even closer. Have a Happy 2024 with more 💰in your pocket!

Spinning a Yarn

This thrift shop find hit on 2 cylinders - Christmas and yarn. Both are popular items on eBay.

75 days until Christmas and I am pulling out all of the stops this year. Bringing down the big full-sized tree, rather than just the three foot one. Bringing out ALL of the decorations rather than just part of them.🎄There is no particular reason why other than how many Christmases will I have left to celebrate 20, 30, or 40, if I am lucky? I would 105 in 40 years.

My estate is finally in order. Having worked in the legal field nearly all of my life, I know the importance of having things organized for your family.

Quilting update: I spent a few hours searching for tiki-themed fabric and found it next to impossible! I do know I want to create a tiki bar quilt for either the county or state fair competition. Progress so far - Batik background fabric purchased. Split-leaf philodendron leaves fabric found in remnants. I will have to patchwork piece the tiki God(s), then applique them onto the background.

Pattern of the Day is this incredibly cute Americana decor. First time I have run into a Sacramento-based pattern maker.

Sewing patterns are caught up on the listing board. Next is books, and a ton of yarn! 💙

Vacation Sourcing

If I had my way, I would be thrift shopping every day during vacation. As it was, I was able to visit Fort Bragg secondhand sites on each successive Friday.

The best of the bunch was the Paul Bunyan thrift shop which featured cookbooks buy 1 get 1 free. Mastering the Art of French Cooking is an automatic $20+ sale.

There were sewing patterns, and fabric, two finds found most frequently in the wild. This $5 bag of scraps included orphan blocks and pieces.

Gramma's Attic at the Redwood Coast Seniors Center produced a bag of completed crochet squares. I routinely find this type of handcrafted item there, and they always sell.

This thrifted patriotic panel may finally spur me to complete a patriotic quilt. I keep tubs of fabric for certain themed quilts such as plaid wovens, Christmas prints, animal-themed fabric, and batiks.

Fishing was largely unsuccessful as the Mr. caught one, and I caught none. We were circled by a few dolphins but I was unable to capture a good video.

Finally, these Angelic Messenger Cards priced $2 at thrift were hidden in the books for sale. Yet another $20 bill waiting to be picked up by me.

Cubicle Wall Coverings

Since I am in office three days a week and have been on that schedule for the past year, I can now show off my cubicle wall coverings to my co-workers.

The heart-themed one came to me partially finished. I honestly don't remember at what stage but I do remember I added the borders, quilted, and bound it.

This one was a study in shiny fabric, all my creation from start to finish and matchstick quilted.

My last example that I display during the summer months, is a quilt guild creation in its entirety. Bought at thrift, I enjoy the other's handiwork.

In my offsite storage, I discovered a group of needlekits I had squirreled away. My intent was to finish them someday, but it is more wishes and hopes than reality. I still have 10-15 kits in my project room.

My offsite storage also contains the contents of my mom's room from the assisted living facility. I tackle estate in small increments of time. If I linger too long, it becomes a walk down memory lane and I miss her all the more.

In my Christmas cleanup, I found a Ziploc bag of military patches. They joined my small death pile of miscellaneous items to list. I know CDs can be money makers, but there are two reasons why I may not list them, (1) I can't rip them to my laptop any more (doesn't work for some reason since a Windows upgrade,) and (2) there is no ability to play CDs in newer vehicles - there is no CD player. Christmas CDs did not sell as well as they did the year before.

I am taking a hard look at that I keeping, and what I am storing. Every 6 months, I go through a closet cleanout when I shift my clothes from one season to another. Those clothes with even the slightest hip factor, go to the clothing reseller for credit.

I have found since I began selling items on eBay, I buy less and less for myself - less tchotchkes, less clothing, less useless stuff.

What is your thrifting style?

Bucket List Item - A Lady Head Vase

Finding one of these head vases has been on my thrift shop bucket list for years! In my personal library, I even have the Schiffer Book for Collectors, The Encyclopedia of Head Vases with Price Guide (1996). She was found at my fav hospice thrift priced at $1.49. I kissed her. She is a little damaged (aren't we all?) but intact.

A $6 quilt top from Goodwill turned into $150 as the finished product. I could have saved $100 in the cost if I quilted it myself but that is too taxing. The longarmer also offered unique designs - this one is goldfish and bubbles in a multicolor thread.

The baby quilt is on its way back to me for binding. I have promised a few quilt gifts to family. I am going to make a few quilt tops and then have them choose one of those or make something else. November I will devote to my National Park quilt. I would like to have that quilted and bound before year's end.

I am already queuing up my Countdown to Christmas posts. I found a fun 1980s holiday-themed publication to showcase images. Watch what I do with this background from that book on Ugly Christmas Sweater day.

You don't have to be in exotic places any more when there is photoshop. My blog image is the result of a recent play session. I will have to change it up twice, once in November, and then again in December for holiday attire.

Reseller update: Guess what is up next for eBay listings? Yep, its Yarn!

The day I sold 5 skeins for $25, I picked up the large bag of yarn at thrift for $7.99. I love this business!

Off and Running

The reason for the post title is that the months from September through year's end seem to fly by. These two G.I. Joe figurines are another item I collect. Found at a flea market for $1 each, they too like to hang at the marina.

I rarely deal in clothing but this Mexican embroidered jean jacket will go up on eBay. There are other embroidery details on the sleeves - bought for $40, will be listed for at least $80.

The Paul Bunyan thrift shop in Fort Bragg came through for me with quilt books, crocheted squares, and fabric (I don't need).

We, like many others, are escaping the 100+ heat. We have had the good fortune of staying close to the coast where the weather is downright gorgeous. I hope you too are staying comfortable.

Happy 4th of July holiday

The red and white crocheted blanket and USA patriotic wall hanging were both purchased last month at a 1/2 off thrift sale. It was almost criminal that I spent less than $5 for the two. I image the cost of just the yarn alone on that well crafted crocheted piece was over $30.

I bought the red and white blanket to sell, but now I just can't part with it.

I sent a quilt to be completed at the long-armer as a birthday present to myself. My next project is a baby quilt. It should be a quick put-together of bordering the blocks, and sewing everything together.

Recent listings on eBay were a group of needlekits. Those finds come in batches, so when I buy them, I just scoop them up. Even better if they are Christmas ones. I don't really examine them until I prepare them for listing.

This kit I am especially fond of because I made the original when it came out in 1990s, and is displayed on the mantel each holiday season.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/185481816565

It will be Christmas in July for me because people buy holiday items all year round. Two of my listed kits sold next day.

This display was at my fav hospice thrift - I would snag that flag quilt had I been in town.

We are back in Bragg - Fort Bragg, California. I hope to have more whale/fish pics in an upcoming post.

Happy Birthday to Me

A happy to be alive birthday. I did one of my fav activities - thrifting! I will complete this nearly-finished packet of doll house accessories that include a rug, pillow, and picture frame. A great birthday present to me from mystery crafter.

Quilting is a contact sport - it is you against the beast. It seems I have injured myself again and I can only attribute it to my full-on press to meet a deadline. Machine quilting, through any sewing machine other than a long-arm, is challenging. Quilting by check is definitely my future. I did utilize one service but she complained about my pieced backings, and I was not fond of the widely-spaced quilting designs she offered.

So, I am splurging and sending in this basket block quilt top with a wide backing Moda Grunge basic grey to a new-to-me longarmer.

Segueing to the subject of fabric and their use in reseller listings, I will utilize that Moda grunge fabric as my image background. I have also kept an eye out for yarn, see my post my-first-foray-into-yarn.

This is my first post using the tips from the video below. I was inspired to be more inventive in my eBay listings.

Until next time,
Tami

Just Call Me Jonah-ette, and a thrifting update

I spent the vast majority of my vacation doing nothing. Nothing being simple things like eating at restaurants, walking the dog, and soaking up sunshine.

One side perk of being on the ocean was a random visit from a whale. It circled the boat a number of times. The Mr. thought because the boat is red, it stands out from the rest.

We spent a number of hours trolling for salmon. One silver was caught but had to be released. There will be other fishing excursions over these summer months.

On to a thrifting update -

On my return home my fav hospice thrift had bag of fabric, yarn, pool noodles (10 cents ea.) for packing. A pink Ty poodle NWT hitched a ride to my remote office.

One of the mystery bags of fabric contained two partially completed quilts, some panels, the publication to complete the Chevron quilt, and a plaid woven *sings the words*.

Here is the drawing from kind-of mystery quilter that incorporated the quilt blocks in the corner left. There are templates and fabrics intended for the project. I will need to iron out the quilt blocks.
I note kind-of mystery because pinned to some fabric was a copy of a local real estate agent's Travel Agent Card. She had passed in 2020, and it seemed the estate had been settled because no quilter would willingly give up her stash.

I will sew together the quilt blocks she provided. Completed quilt tops are quick/easy sales for me on eBay.

Ending the post with the cutest of the appliqued quilt blocks in this unique project.
