Going Tyrolean

Visible Monday of the Tyrolean kind. Ok, so it is not a fashion trend right this second, it could be! *grins*

This thrifted pair of the Fjord Fashion sweater and olive green Gloria Vanderbilt jeans fit the prompt of "Green-acorn" for SpyGirl Anne's 52 pick-me-up. I borrowed Mr. VZ's Stetson straw hat and am wearing my Danner camo hiking boots.

I'm telling ya Tyrolean, here is an image of my brother and me from 1961.

Having completed my fashion analysis and clothing selection class, I have learned I am a rectangle shape. This is not uncommon for people of a certain vintage. Waists thicken, things happen.

The final required students to do a fashion analysis of a prospective customer. We each choose a slip of paper from a hat. My customer was Hannah, an interior designer who favors dramatic style in her clothing. A 31-year old, she is 5' 8" tall, heavy framed, broad shouldered, non-athletic and wants to appear slimmer. She has a diamond-shaped face, thinks her legs are her best attribute and wants to show them off.

The first task of the final was to sketch your customer's body type sans clothing from the description provided above.

Among other analyses, we were to choose an outfit for a social event. I had Hanna attending an art gallery gala in Sacramento.

Quilting update - culled from my recent purchase of a $3 thrifted bag of fabric scraps and paired with the fabric in the foreground as a backing, I will be making a Corn Crib quilt for my mother's caregiver.

Diagram from Quick and Easy Projects for the Weekend Quilter

The Corn Crib Quilt is described as "crib" being a safe place for baby to sleep and a "corn crib" an American name to store corn. Here are the strips that were then cut into two-color rectangles.

I find crib-sized quilts the perfect size to throw on the back of a couch to add color and within arm's reach to add warmth.

Look at the symmetry and color composition.  Lovely! I had the quilt pieces laid out carefully and in order of the chart and then, well as is said, the best laid plans of mice and men (and quilters) often go awry.  Here is the end result of the corn crib quilt top. I should have known better than to join the squares as full strips. Bad Tami. Then I had to cover up the uneven squares with floral appliques. The creation became less about the squares pattern and more about the appliques.

Fashion assignment of the week

My ongoing love for my fashion analysis class continues.  The assignment this week is to find a picture of abstract art, then select a pattern and describe the material you would use.

I chose this Mid Century Modern piece by Jan Skacelik.  The pattern I would use is this 1954 Vogue vintage.

Fabric I would use would be a cotton/polyester blend.

On to thrift shop jewelry - if you are buying your costume jewelry at retailers, you are missing out on the varied selection offered secondhand.  This hospice set was a bargain at $7.50.

Thanksgiving preparations are in full swing - blessings to you and those cherished ones in your life.

Learning Addicted and fashion assignment of the week

Hi, my name is Tami and I am Learning Addicted.  What sounds like a terrible affliction is I have earned an associate's degree and I continue to take classes.  Spring classes have posted and I am ruminating over which one to take - I am Learning Addicted.

I prefer online classes.  It allows me the flexibility to study during my breaks and lunch at work.  The big bonus is being able to study at home.  I live in a quiet rural setting where there are few distractions.

I managed to get a priority registration for the spring 2016 classes. Added to my cart are (1) Intro to Computer Information Science, (2) Legal Writing and (3) Women in History.  I would love to take all three but only one is manageable.  Legal Writing hinges on whether I get an interview for a legal position where this class is a requirement.

My family shakes their heads when I tell them I am continuing on with my education.  By the time I finish my bachelor's degree, I will be retiring (or so they say).  I figure I will be seven or eight years older anyway.  With continual learning, my mind is being challenged and I don't get bored.  I am Learning Addicted.

My fashion analysis assignment this week is to act in the role of a designer, to visit the fabric store of my choosing and select a fabric. Then create a design around the fabric and take a picture to post.  I visited Shop de Fabrique of Tami.

Next, select a pattern that is compatible with the fabric and sketch a design (I'm telling ya, I love this class!).  It must be a new design, not one from your portfolio.  Take a picture to post.

My design is loosely based on the Vogue Pattern of the Day.  I wish Vogue dated their patterns, especially this retro one.  She is the latest in my batch of thrift shop acquisitions.

I wrangled up these fabric remnants for a thrift shop $5.  The polka dot print alone is six yards in length.  It will be perfect as a backing to my daughter's log cabin quilt I hope to finish before Christmas.

My Countdown to Christmas begins in 20 days.  I am working on a low pressure linkup - at the very least a parade of Ugly Christmas Sweaters!

Learning Fashion Anlysis and Island Dreaming

I began my fashion analysis class today.  On site orientation took place with an audience of tiny fashion renderings and headless plastic torsos.  This is the first online class of its kind taught at American River College.

Our first assignment was to post on the discussion board, "What's My Style?" along with a full length photo (from this post)  and a description of your style.  I believe I had died and gone to heaven! Earn college credits and do what I have been doing as a thrifted fashion blogger for the past 4 years?  Amazing.

It is no secret that I have been in an island kind of mood all summer.  It has been a virtual staycation though as I have never left the states.  Weekend thrift shopping scored a Chaps black and white skirt, another lei, a Lei Alaho Casual Hawaiian dress and at least 3 yards of a black cotton print ($8 total).

Pattern of the Day features the maxi version of the Muu Muu.

Hospice shopping I utilized my frequent buyer card and spent around $3 for the lot of two books, a Paris Las Vegas lavender t-shirt, bag of Barbie clothes, a black shag wig and piggy tablecloth weights.
