8.88 and Forging Ahead on YouTube

Timing for half day off at thrift means not getting there right when they open the doors, but about an hour later, when they start rolling the merch on the floor.

Included in my less than $10 purchase were a men's flannel XL shirt, 4 publications, another bag of fabric (mainly Christmas), landscape fabric, and a bag of horses + squirrel pictured above.

Continuing with my series on the Franklin sewing machine, this one focuses on maintenance.

Over at IG for the #igquiltfest2020, the day's prompt is "Fav technique w/tip." I will have to see what other's posting if I have something that will fit that prompt.

YouTubing It and the IG Quilt Fest

The leaping last day of February meant a $5 bag of remnant fabric was another violation to my Buy No Fabric Challenge. It was all for me at thrift with that and some 50 cent fun things of vintage thimbles, hair ties and a beaded fabric embellishment.

The remnants were a good purchase though, higher end manufacturers, some novelty prints, some Christmas (which I don't need) but intend on whipping up into a quilt at some point.

There is a story behind Christmas fabric. Early on in my quilting career, I tried to link up with a certain group of quilters (who shall remain unnamed). I was too late to get in on the ones who were highlighted in the hop, so I linked up my creation in the comments. One would have thought I violated a Biblical rule of quilting blog hops because I received a lengthy STERN email from said blog host. Linking up my post in the comments was simply not allowed, she told me. I obliged by deleting my comment and any reference to her and her blog. It has since left a bad taste in my mouth for holiday-themed quilts. I never finished the quilt I made, it remains a flimsy to this day.

On to American Patchwork & Quilting UFO challenge. No. 7 was posted for March, on my first list it is a rooster needlepoint, in the queue but awaiting its turn after completion of the magnolia needlepoint. My No. 7 on my second list is a Monet's Garden needlepoint kit up for sale. If it doesn't sell, I won't shed a tear because I will keep it as one of my projects.

I bought a bobbin winder and think it will be a good purchase because I have heard other quilters say they like them. It is the first sewing machine related purchase that I have bought retail, other than my sewing machine.

Here is my first YouTube tutorial on my Franklin sewing machine. I hadn't been able to find exact information on it so I am posting what I have learned. I hope to do more of these on how to use the attachments (a lofty goal) and free motion quilting with the machine.

March is also National Quilting Month and festivities have begun on Instagram with the #igquiltfest2020. I will post on a few prompts as tamaschen.

Officially permanent and a Franklin joined my troop

I have been on pins and needles these past few months not knowing whether I could continue working as a legal analyst in my current department. A permanent position was offered and I am delighted to continue working there. Being a public servant provides stability and I enjoy the work. Having secured this career path, I can continue my college coursework for a paralegal certificate.

The California State Fair has posted its Fiber Crafts 2019 Guide. After looking over the categories, I may be able to enter one of my quilts under Division 165 - Other Fiber Art, or Division 199 - Modern Quilts. I am tending toward an entry in Modern Quilts hoping to place in the ribbon category.

I had told myself that I wasn't going to buy any more vintage machines, but this one I just couldn't pass by priced at $45, it was half off day. It is heaviest of all machines I have purchased so far, I couldn't lift or even drag it. It is time to get a sturdy sewing cabinet for these heavier machines.

On the flip side of my sewing machine purchases, I haven't sent any to the repair shop yet and incurred that cost. The Franklin has all of its feet, two bobbins and what looks to be a replacement pedal. The wiring on the attached light looks a little suspicious. The machine is mounted on a wood base that slides out of the case.

My other finds for that day included high loft batting ($3), two new dress shirts, one white/one black and a graphic Wonder Woman t-shirt.

Sometimes progress is slow and go

On my UFO Challenge list, February prompt No. 10 qualifies - the Art with Fabric quilt. This has been in unfinished mode since last year. I have been chipping away at it, shooting for matchstick quilting or very close to it. I have called it the "monster" behind its back, so heavy and bulky. Lawd, how I wish this was a finish like right now.

Next to composition quilt is the plaid hexagon in pin basted stage.

My basket of goodness, WIPs, wanna be WIPs and a few fabric pulls.

The prompt for the linkup group is 6, my magnolia needlepoint. I am about a third of the way through that project.

So we move into March with the blog linkup prompt being 4 (black/cream/pink quilt), and the FB challenge prompt as 8, a Mariner's quilt. Thinking I will punt on both prompts. Half on my To-Do list are wanna be, they wanna be quilts but I don't have a solid concept of color and design. I also would like to get back to my No. 1 - basket block quilt began at the end of 2018 and put aside to keep up with the challenges. I have also promised my daughter a quilt but I am stuck on how it should be designed. We've picked out a block but it intimidates me just a bit on its construction.

I have also committed to the Quilt Qwazy Queens blog hop with my post scheduled to go live on March 15. I've got that project to git to gitting if I want to fulfill my commitment.

The #IGQuiltfest on Instagram began today with introductions as the Day 1 prompt. I will be posting as tamaschen.

Because Google+ went by the wayside - I had a lot of followers through that platform, I have reactivated my Twitter account with the handle @CommandoShop. I will be pushing my blog posts there also.

March Madness and February blog hops

No, not in the basketball kind of way but in the qwazy quilting way.

Listed at the end of this post are bloggers who "dusted off their quilt books" and chose a project. I had the good fortune to buy these specialty quilt eye-candy publications for $1 each along with some fabrics thrifting. The only problem with discovering new projects and new ideas is that it takes me off on a tangent with pending projects begging to be finished.

March is National Quilting Month and to celebrate it there is an #IGQuiltFest on Instagram. It is a daily photo challenge (March 1-31) hosted by Amy's Creative Side. I participated last year and it was hecka fun. There are A LOT of upscale quilters, the ones who get all their points right and everything matches up, but I still get in a post or two.

March also means crazy quilting for me. The Quilt Qwazy Queens blog hop theme is "Choose Your Own Qwazy." My day to post is March 15th, featuring another crazy quilt incorporating satin fabric.

Two hops coming up are one featuring "wings" in quilts.

Spring looks to be roaring in with lots of creative activity. We are still in for stormy weather in Northern California. I am not complaining and hope I don't hear the word "drought" at all during the year.

Yellow block the pineapple way

Being intimidated by my pineapple trim tool ended with this being my first block. I've had the tool for some months now and realize again why I bought it - love the look of this block! I am kicking myself that I don't have more of these remnant particular fabrics. Participating in the #2018 Monthly Color Challenge with the March color being YELLOW. Sacramento public art graffiti in the background.

Pineapple block to pineapple pin! This vintage beauty was a $2 thrift shop find last month. It has all of its jewels and inside is stamped "Alice Caviness." Finding this made my day!

I have been on a pineapple kick for some time now, here is a link to a post in December 2017 abbey-choir-and-pineapples and December 2016 pineapple-express.

That same thrift store produced these Folk Art publications (I snapped those right up! Tami eye candy.) They are keepers.

Rounding it off with fabric remnants and my mini daffs in bloom. There are some nice preprinted panels in the bundle at the far left. The middle fabric bundle will soon become another cubicle wall cover, an elegant William and Morris museum print.

Surprise gift for a supervisor - quilted kennel cover

Having finally landed a public sector paralegal job, I wanted to give a surprise gift to my supervisor who had agreed to act as a reference. She had also given me the print material in the right and left corners of the image below. She had asked me if I could use the material and I said, "yes" all the while planning to do something special for her.

My "sup" is also involved in feral cat rescue so I made her a quilted kennel cover. The cat-related fabric was the basis for a quasi strip-quilt top. She uses blankets over cat carriers as temporary homes for captured feral cats. Once the animal is either spayed/neutered, treated for any ailments, they are released back into the area from which they were captured. Some are recruited as barn cats in rural areas.

It seems to meet with my cat's approval.

Quilt sandwich layout. I cut it close on that batting but supplemented it later.

Rather than put a separate binding on this, I kept 3" leftover from backing, brought it around the front and sewed in down with a 1/4" seam allowance. My first mitered corners too!

I had so much fun putting together that kennel cover, I zipped together another one for quilting. I have decided my patchwork style of piecing is a little ADHD. I kind of "wing it" sewing fabric together and then trimming off excess and squaring it up. I treat it more like I would paint on a canvas, rather than adhering to rigid rules and procedures.

Mystery box of fabric from New York provided material to supplement a baby quilt, son's and patriotic quilts. The kitty print panels and calico prints courtesy of East Coast mystery quilter.

Hospice thrift shopping resulted in $8 worth of 5 Christmas CDs for my annual Countdown to Christmas, a Style & Co. grey long sleeved pin striped shirt, t-shirt and material.

On Instagram as tamaschen, I am participating in this month's #IGQuiltFest with 31 quilt-related prompts. One prompt being "pillow finish" so it was motivation enough to complete this pink and lavender based log cabin square block with thrifted pillow form.

I certainly had a very productive weekend with a fast finish of one kennel cover, prep for another, and a pillow done!
