I have spent the last 10 years in state service for various departments in California. The game is to keep moving up so you can max out your monthly retirement benefit.

There are three departments that I would recommend to anyone entering state service. All in Sacramento, they are:

Attorney General's Office
California Department of Health Care Services
California Department of Public Health

I won't list the two departments where I had sub-par experiences and left as quickly as possible. At one location, I lasted 3 months and requested a return to the AG's office. The other awful place was a 100% remote position where I struggled for over a year and left on medical leave.

The beauty of the state's safety net for an older worker is if you don't succeed at a promotional position, you have the right to return to your last passed probationary position. Medical leave is also available if the stress of the job becomes overwhelming.

I will miss Sacramento. It is just now starting to revive. State departments have mandated a two day return to office in the upcoming months. New restaurants are in the works. The mourning period from the last few years is starting to lift.

I will not miss the commute. It is a one hour one way trek on a good day. Two hours on the road each in-office work day meant I listened to a lot of music.

If you are someone in your 30s or 40s, my advice is to have a 3-legged stool in retirement. That stool represents your social security, retirement from your job, and your personal IRA. A fourth leg to a stool would be extra income such as eBay sales. The studier that stool is, the more comfortable you will be.
Tami Von Zalezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11065017061040785838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1844816520985230989.post-76789264673930177002024-02-29T05:00:00.000-08:002024-02-29T05:00:00.140-08:00February Weird and Wacky and Seller Update
My monthly series continues on thrift shop weird and wacky items. The last fabric horde I was able to buy at thrift included a lot of small pieces, fat quarter and smaller.

Onto my lead title - Quilting is the Perfect Craft for the Attention Deficit. Let me explain. There is a word in quilting - "Squirrel." Squirrel means your attention has been diverted from one project to another, to another, to another.

Try as I might, I cannot adhere to a schedule of completing my quilt projects. The beauty of the craft is that you DON'T have to do things in a certain order. Also, life events come up like the birth of a baby, or other celebratory milestones.

My big news is my daughter is engaged and is having a REAL wedding. ๐ Not just a go-to-Vegas and maybe have a witness, we are talking with a maid of honor and bridesmaids. So exciting!

But I digress - back to the quilting talk. I have a list of projects. Have I completed any of them on the list? Lawd NO. I have squirrel projected these last two quilts. To tie up the idea of my daughter's upcoming wedding, I have the idea of making cat or dog themed lap quilts to give as gifts for the bridesmaids. This will be as a thank-you for acting as the same, in addition to whatever gifts to the group as my daughter thinks appropriate.

Here are some images of the fabric pulls. I discovered I have more dog fabric than cat fabric. I do know that the maid of honor is a "dog person." Hoping the other three bridesmaids are also, but I can spin together one cat quilt.

I will most likely do 4 patches bordered in companion fabric. No, but I will scan in the images and put them on a desktop slideshow.

Books are on the board now. I have been more particular about the CDs I list. This one is the best of the bunch. While not in the stratosphere on price, it listed for higher than the average $15 of the others. To give some background, I have been shopping at second-hand stores for over 50 years. The majority of those years, I just bought for myself, friends, and family. There is one proviso-I shop in upscale communities.

A few years ago, I decided I had enough items in my personal collection to list for sale on eBay. I already had an eBay account for selling my used college textbooks. I also had a somewhat extensive vintage sewing pattern collection. At the time, I was scanning in the pattern packet fronts and sharing them as a Pattern of the Day on this blog.

Having moved out of management and into public service in my job, I didn't require the professional wardrobe I had before. My clothes choices turned to casual and most items were bought at thrift.

I am sort of a clumsy person when it comes to mugs and dishes. I break them on a routine basis. I have replaced our stoneware pattern at least three times, all through thrifted pieces. I love coffee mugs and as a Seattle native am a regular coffee drinker. Our mug collection comes from thrift.

Pyrex, when you find it in the wild, is very popular to sell. I keep a few pieces I have found for my own use.

China plates, etc. you can nearly find for the taking, seems no one entertains large groups anymore. Last year I picked up at Goodwill some Christmas-themed plates at 99 cents each.

The point being you can furnish your house, kitchen, bedroom, buying thrifted items. There are deals in furniture (avoid fabric upholstery), lamps, linens, and artwork.

You can clothe yourself and nearly your entire family with thrifted clothing. Our hospice thrift occasionally has $1 clothing items sales. How can you beat that? I pick up the best items and then take those to a clothing reseller who will give me $5-$6 per item. ๐ฅBOOM, money just made.

I am a business major with a legal background. The idea, and you may have heard this phrase before, is Buy Low and Sell High. As an example, I can buy sewing patterns for 25 cents to $1 each. Each pattern will then sell for $5 to $25. Multiply that by the thousands of patterns I have listed - it generates an income of $500 a month of clear profit. I am not going to detail all of the costs of selling here but those who have their own businesses know there is the cost of time and opportunity.

What are opportunity costs? I define it as something you have to give up in pursuit of something else. In other words, rather than pursuing fun, leisure activities, you choose to invest in work.

My last tidbit on money management. The financial area where most people run into trouble is in the purchase of a new vehicle. Dealers are loathe to outright sell the vehicle and will steer a consumer into a lease. That lease will cost the consumer double the cost of the vehicle. After the lease is over, the consumer can then buy the vehicle. In some cases, the total cost exceeds $200,000. How is that problem solved? You save until you have the purchase price of the vehicle, or have it financed through a credit union.

In sum, keep your funds close and your friends even closer. Have a Happy 2024 with more ๐ฐin your pocket!
Tami Von Zalezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11065017061040785838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1844816520985230989.post-84210400394151148022023-12-26T05:00:00.000-08:002023-12-26T05:00:00.133-08:00Year in Review
Every year round this time, I take a look at my top locations for my audience. To my complete surprise, Google stats reported Germany had surpassed my American audience by nearly double the numbers! My real surname is German, and my alias last name Von Zalez is sorta German.

Coming in at Number 2 is the U.S., followed by France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Albania, Canada, and finally Russia. My Russian audience surpassed my American audience prior to the Ukrainian war. I suspect internet access in Russia has been limited.

Google and Pinterest continue to remain top referring sites.

I also Google my blog to see what comes up and Lookee here! I am listed as No. 8 in thrifting blogs in 2023 on feedspot.com. Not sure if that means anything, but cool to land in the Top 10.

Big news on the personal front - I am returning to college! I took a 2 year hiatus from my art history degree. Part of the problem was the last class had an online textbook. I just can't handle that. I need an actual book. When I read I remember the sections and where they are located. Sure, you can bookmark an online document, but it is not the same thing.

One year I ran into all sorts of tax advantages being a college student. I think there was some kind of lifetime educational credit or something. Tax season here in the U.S. is fast approaching. If one is self-employed, there are all sorts of tax advantages.

Back to the possibilities for 2024 - I can take an in-person day class for the fall session. One of my requirements is Drawing and Composition, a class that has been on my Wish List for years.

Christmas present to myself was the $60 including shipping cost, online auction purchase of approx. 30 quilter's orphan blocks. Half were unusable and thrifted back to the Great Thrift Shop Beyond. There were 22 completed blocks and more than enough pieces for this fantastic star-themed quilt.

There are also some nice specialty-pieced blocks I will save for future use. There are 6 fairy-themed blocks - another project suited for a gift quilt.

Since we are on the subject of quilting, here is a quick year in review of my completed projects.

Son's fish fabric quilt.
